Q: How did they get my email address?
A: Typically, an email spammer buys a list of email addresses from a list broker, who compiles it by ''harvesting'' addresses from the Internet. If your email address appears in a newsgroup posting, on a website, in a chat room, or in an online service’s membership directory, it may find its way onto these lists. The marketer then uses special software that can send hundreds of thousands – even millions – of email messages to the addresses at the click of a mouse.
Q: Is my Service Credit Union information safe?
A: Yes, your information is safe unless you give it out.
Q: I've responded to one of these phishing scams what do I do now?
A: Don't panic, immediately, call our Contact Center at 1-800-936-7730 or stop into one of our branches. They will ask you what information you’ve provided and help you to secure your information and accounts.
Q: I don't even have a Service Credit Union account why am I getting these emails?
A: The nature of phishing is to cast out a wide net and see what you’ll catch. These fraudsters don’t know what relationship you have with any specific financial institution unless you give them that information. They are just hoping that they have provided the right 'bait' to get that information from you.
Q: I’m tried of getting these, can’t you make them stop?
A: Unfortunately, we can’t stop fraudsters from sending spam or spoofing our website. By reporting phishing scams we can get the spoofed sites shut down right away so that if someone does inadvertently click on a link that it doesn’t go anywhere.
