Due to the arrival of tax season, the IRS is warning taxpayers of an increase in phishing scams claiming to be from the IRS.  There are several current phone and email scams circulating that use the IRS as the lure.  The goal of these scams is to trick people into providing personal information such as Social Security Number or bank account information which can be used for identity theft. 

We received numerous reports last night and today from members and non-members who received text messages claiming to be from SCU.  These messages are a phishing scam aimed at obtaining sensitive personal information such as social security numbers. This phone number is now out of service.  Never respond to text messages from phone numbers you do not recognize, especially if it is asking for personal information. SCU’s member information has not been compromised.  It is a coincidence that some SCU members have received these messages. 

Several members have reported receiving phishing emails that claim to be from Service Credit Union.  There are currently two variations of this scam.  The first email has a subject line of Service Credit Union Secure Email Notification and tells the recipient to call the 800 number provided to discuss recent account activity.  One member that called the number reported that the person asked him for credit card information.

SCU phishing scam 4 17 08 Members and non members have reported receiving a phishing email claiming to be from Service Credit Union.  The email subject line reads You Have 1 New Message.  The message claims that the receiver’s Internet.

America’s Credit Union phishing scam 1 8 08 An SCU member recently reported receiving an email claiming to be from America’s Credit Union.  The email claimed that for security purposes, the member must activate an online account in their database.
