Financial Readiness Checklist

General Guidelines

• Open a checking account
• Open a savings account
• Sign up for direct deposit• Include a spouse or relative on the account
• Sign up for overdraft protection to avoid returned checks
• You may also want to sign up for a line-of-credit in case you have unexpected financial needs during your deployment
• Obtain and activate an ATM and/or VISA Debit Card

Additional Guidelines if Deployed

• Review financial information with your spouse or relative. Keep copies of your records.
• Open a separate checking account for your spouse (with you as joint owner) and fund through direct transfer from your checking or military pay.
• Prepare a will for you and your spouse
• Update beneficiaries on insurance policies
• Be sure all car insurance policies and registrations are current
• Write down your account numbers, phone and fax numbers and strore in a secure place
• Decide in advance on how your income taxes will be filed and by whom
• Make sure you and you spouse know the location of important documents: such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, bank records, insurance policies, vehicle titles and wills.
